AMSTERDAM to CANAJOHARIE / Sunday, June 12 (Day 143)

Admiral's Log:     7:55 am, Sun. 6/12/16
Air Temp:   64     Water Temp:   2
                        Winds:   17 mph
                        Speed:   8.5 knots

It was suppose to be a windy day, so we got an early start with Phase II, hoping to get through the next three locks before the winds picked up too much.

It only took us two hours to go through the next three locks; 11, 12 and 13. We did have quite a bit of wind and currents in number 13. We even had to cut our line! That is very rare, but thank goodness I had a knife hooked on my life jacket to give Casey. He had his line wrapped around the cable of the lock and the rope got twisted, so the boat was rising, but the rope was not. So we were starting to list to one side. Mike yelled at Casey to cut the line. He could not get Mike's knife open so I gave him mine. A little intense at the time. But luckily it was a junky line and I was wearing my knife!

Approaching first lock of the day. See the spillway on the left.
Working on my locking skills.
We got to Canajoharie at 11. We only plan on staying here one night. So we walked into town and had a burger at an old Pub. The Pub was quite colorful. Some guy came in ordered a beer and soon after, his wife or girlfriend came in and cussed him out with us sitting right there.

First time we've ever seen this kind of stoplight!

After lunch we toured the local museum. This town was the home of Beechnut Gum until it moved to Florida, New York, a few years ago.

When we got back to the boat we heard that other Loopers had some scary experiences locking. The current made one boat turn 180 degrees, making exited backwards out the gate. Another couple lost their lock lines and ended up knocking back and forth between the lock walls. Then the same woman fell off her boat when she was docking!

We fixed chili for dinner, which was a perfect end to this chilly day.
