SANDY HOOK to CROTON on the HUDSON / Thursday, June 2 to Saturday, June 4 (Days 133-135)

Admiral's Log:     8:05 am, Thrs. 6/2/16
Air Temp:   64     Water Temp:   63
                        Winds:   7 mph
                        Speed:   7.3 knots

We had an overcast day, but got a little better as we approached the city. This was to be an exciting day, we are going to get our photo taken in front of the Statue of Liberty! This is the obligatory photo all Loopers take, can't say enough how awesome it was! We planned this for several days to make sure we had another boat with us so we could take photos of each other to share.

The blue dot is us, Cool!
New York Harbor is very hectic! Barges and ferries and taxis and pleasure boats just zooming all around. You have to pay major attention. Trying to maneuver your boat in front of the statue without getting hit by another boat is quite the challenge. But my captain did it no problem.

Robbins Reef Lighthouse
We went by Ellis Island too. It is a very pretty building, which was totally restored in the 80's (more on that later). Of course the skyline was awesome, including the new 911 Tower.

We had no idea there would be cliffs on the Hudson!

After we got through New York Harbor we proceeded up the Hudson passing a lot more cool stuff on our way to Half Moon Bay Marina at Croton on the Hudson.

We arrived at 3:15 and were happy to see Loopers Pam and Kit from India Jayne. This marina is within walking distance of the train, so this will be our transportation to the city for the next couple of days.Chica, Lazy Suzan and us walked into the town of Croton on the Hudson and had pretty decent Bar-B-Que for dinner.

Friday, we took the train to Grand Central Station in New York City. What a cool train station. Very art deco, marble and stained glass and chandeliers. We took a cab from Grand Central Station to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

We could not get into the Statue because you have to purchase tickets ahead of time for the pedestal and the crown. But we figured you could not beat the view we had yesterday. So we walked around the base and took a few photos.

Ellis Island was really interesting. There were tons of really amazing immigrant stories. Why the left their home countries and and what they went through to get here. We are wimps these days compared to their ordeals. It really puts into perspective what a great country we live in, warts and all.

We took the train back to Croton and walked to a local diner and had breakfast for dinner. I was just what the doctor ordered. We had not eaten all day!  We walked back to the boat and had docktails with Chica on Phase II.

Saturday, we took the train again, but this time we took the subway to the 911 Memorial and Museum. I'm sure I don't need to say it, but this was a very moving and somber experience. The pools are huge, the ledges are engraved with the victims names.

The museum contains everything from giant steel beams to tiny buttons.  There was a movie we could not see because the line was way too long. Photos were not allowed in several rooms so I can't post some of the more memorable pieces. But it is a must see if you are ever in NYC.

We returned via the train around 4:30 and had cocktails by our boat.

Mike and I did not go here but wanted to post these pictures from Lori of Phase II. She and her husband walked to the Croton Dam. It is the 3rd largest cut stone structure in the world after the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Giza. Who would have thunk it, in this little town. I wish we had time to see it, from the pictures, it looks gorgeous.
